I must have been about 13 years old, when one one day my mother came into my bedroom to have “one of those talks.” Now, Dad never had “the” talk with me, much less “one of” — he never so mentioned the word ‘sex’ to me, didn’t all his life. No, it was Mom who manned up, as it were, and broached the fraught subject.
“You know, I wanted to talk to you about your foreskin,” she said, as she came into my bedroom that bright and sunny day. She sat on the edge of the bed.
I took a deep breath. “Okay.”
“All of you boys have been circumcised, but yours is a little bit different,” she continued in her ‘perfectly-normal-thing-to-talk-about’ voice.
“When you were born, the obstetrician was one of the best. Dr. Horst recommended him. He was up on all the latest practices in his field.”
“Uh-hunh?”
“And it was very fashionable, at that time, to not take so much of the foreskin off. Remove enough it make it easy to keep your penis clean, but leave some of the most sensitive areas attached, like the frenulum.
I just wanted to let you know why yours is a little different from the other boys’. In case you noticed.”
“Oh.”
“Well, there you are. When you get older, you might decide you want to have the rest of your foreskin removed. For aesthetic reasons.”
“Okay.”
End of ‘the talk.’ Mom got up from the edge of my bed, and left the room.
Aesthetic Reasons!! In other words, my penis is actually beautiful! And can be made even more so (somehow). It was a lightning-bolt thought. At last, it was okay to go ahead and admire myself, my entire body, to show it off, to be proud of it all! No more shame in the locker room, no invidious comparisons in the naked swimming pool. No, i’m the way I am for a reason, and it’s beautiful in all its aesthetic magnificence. When I was in swimming class, back in the seventh and eighth grades, none of the boys wore swim suits, we all swimmed nude, and everyone was circumcised. I think I never saw a circumcised penis until I saw one in a porn magazine, much later. So though I was a little different — in that my penis was teeny-weeny, the not-fully-circumcised fact never was an issue.
And I just don’t get the controversy over circumcision. I have know many a circumcised cock in my life, and never heard a complaint. ‘Mutilation’ my ass — there are definite advantages to circumcision, and no real disadvantages; it does not decrease sensitivity; over a billion circumcised males attest to that.
And at least two disadvantages of not circumcising:
- Zippers
- Smegma
But I guess, it’s really a matter of taste.
